We wish our customers all the best for the festive season. Thank you for your support in 2019.
See below for Christmas opening times and postal information.

Who are you?
Insectopia is a family-run British business founded at the turn of the 21st century. Our cages and traps are all individually designed and crafted by us here in the UK.

What do you sell?
We make and sell a wide range of competitively priced, high quality, effective products for those studying or rearing butterflies and other insects. As well as traps and cages we also sell information charts, lighting rigs, and fine netting.

You can browse all our stocked products using the tabs at the top of the page. However if you need a specific size or design of netting cage that we don't offer as standard, we can help you out there too. We offer a bespoke design service (see tab above) and are happy to discuss your requirements.

For more information about the materials we use, please visit the 'Our Main Materials' section via 'About Us' in the bar to the left.

Is there a minimum order size?
No order is too big, or too small: we sell individual cages as well as bulk quantities. Our customers include beginners, enthusiasts, educationalists and professional researchers.
We also provide our goods to other entomological retailers.

Where do you ship to?
All of our products can be ordered online by customers in the UK or Europe. For deliveries outside the EU, or if you have have questions of any sort, please email us for help and information.

Do you have a physical shop I can visit?
No, we don't have retail premises. You can however book an appointment to visit our workshop to view any of our products, or discuss your requirements in person. For more information please go to the 'Face to Face' section via 'About Us' in the bar to the left.

Are you on social media?

Christmas and New Year opening times

Christmas and the New Year are times to share with friends and family, and even internet businesses take some time off to eat, drink and be merry! Over the festive season we will therefore be closed at certain times, and offer a skeleton service at others.

A SKELETON SERVICE means that we will endeavour to deal with your enquiry or order as soon as possible, but delays in our usual prompt service may be experienced. At other times we will be CLOSED. During closures we will be unable to process your order, or deal with any email or phone enquiries. If you use email to place an order or contact us, this will still register on our system and will be processed when we re-open.

Up to Tuesday 17 December we will be open and operating as usual
18 - 24 December : Skeleton service
25 December - 2 January : Closed
3 - 7 January : Skeleton service
Normal service will be resumed from Wednesday 8 January

Safari XL Moth Trap

Safari XL Moth Trap

NEW for 2019

Our new Safari XL moth trap is a versatile super-lightweight, supremely portable, economical unit. Drawing on customer feedback from the past several years, the XL is a modified version of our original, extremely popular, Safari design.

New features include:
Lightweight - weighs only 310g (11oz)
Larger size - 40cm (16") diameter and 34 cm (13.5") tall, the XL is roomy with plenty of space for eggboxes and your catch of moths. When not in use, packs away to only 1cm deep.
U-shaped zip - for ease of access
Geotextile base - extra durability when placed on the ground or other surfaces

Just like the original Safari, the XL has an integral central cone with lampholder fitting-ring and assembles rapidly. It can be hung, or placed on a level surface with the support of the included base unit legs. If necessary it can be ground tethered using tent pegs (not supplied, see Related products link).

The Safari XL accepts ES fitting blacklight and blacklight blue actinic lightsources held with shade rings through the 38mm (4") lampholder fitting-ring which sits at the bottom of the cone. Vertically mounted straight actinic tubes can also be fitted - to do so you will need to purchase the steady bar (see Related products). It can also be used with lightweight LED lighting units. Trapping effectiveness is further improved by the whole body shining with translucent 'UV glow' so making the best use of low wattage actinic tube lighting.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING:The Safari XL does not have a rainshield and should not be used in rainy conditions. Insectopia suggest the use of actinic or LED lighting sources, which run sufficiently cool not to be shattered if it unexpectedly begins to rain during operation. The use of mercury blended tungsten (MBT) or other hot-running lamps are not recommended due to the danger of such lamps cracking or exploding if damaged or if used in damp conditions, with risk of personal injury.

NOTE: photographs show the Safari XL when fitted with a 20W blacklight lamp and 38mm lead set. These are optional extras and are not included with the trap. Price shown below is for the XL trap only (which includes the base unit legs and lampholder fitting-ring).
