The long Johnson trap is 115cm (45") long. It is hyperboloid in shape with a top ring of 40cm (16"), and lower ring of 30cm (12") below which extends a short skirt with drawstring. The main body of the trap is black nylon, which makes the trap less conspicuous, with a white lid to encourage upward flight. There is a full length double-slider zip for easy photography, removal, or release of specimens. The 35cm (14") wide landing platform is attached with cord locks and fully adjustable strings which run down the inside of the trap from the lower ring, thereby holding out the skirt. Four tape-loop hanging points are provided for stability. The whole trap, including platform, weighs less than 500g (17oz).
Aperture and Cone
This skirted system allows the lower part of the trap to be easily raised to change the bait without disturbing the top section of the trap. It is also possible to slightly narrow the aperture by closing the skirt somewhat (note however that excessive narrowing will destabilise the platform and is therefore not recommended), or alternatively an optional detachable cone is available which does the same job.
If required, the landing platform can be quickly and easily removed, and the skirt closed completely, leaving a hanging study cage. Or alternatively, optional support rods can be attached, the skirt closed, and the cage taken down and inverted to give a temporary freestanding observation cage. When used in this way, a lightweight feeder can be hung inside by attaching a tape between the support loops.
