We strongly recommend that you look at our Gallery, and at our Product Details (below) before making your purchase.
Buying a Ranger is easy as 1-2-3
STEP 1/ Select your central cone type according to your lighting choice.
Your options are shown in in the grid to the right. So, for example, 38mm Edison Screw fitting lamps can be used with the Ranger Multi and ES style of cone, but not with the Circline style.
STEP 2/ Select your cone base aperture.
Regular cone - 7" (18cm) deep, with a base aperture of 2.25" (5.5cm) Wide cone -5" (13cm) deep, with a base aperture of 4" (10cm)
STEP 3/ Select whether you need a rainshield
Insectopia recommend using a rainshield with MBT lamps. Using a rainshield may also help to extend the life of your actinic lightsource. Please note that rainshields cannot be fitted when using a vane lighting unit.
At Insectopia, we know that buying a moth trap can be a big investment. Our Product Details section below has even more information, and our Gallery has lots of photos, so scroll down the page and take a look so you can be sure of your choice before you buy. Ranger Buying Guide - Product Details
The collecting chamber can be ground tethered or hung. Its frame is made of sturdy wire with solid bar support legs. The sides are of transparent fine-netting with an 'n' shaped double-slider zip for easy access, and there is a durable geotextile base for use on uneven or rough ground. Approx dimensions 10.5" (27cm) tall, 17.5" (44cm) in diameter. The Ranger central cone is made of strong, light-impervious cotton. Models suitable for use with actinic circline or horizontal straight actinics have velcro straps for easy mounting. The cone includes either a plain ring, or a 4" lampholder fitting-ring, depending on the model chosen. Two cone base aperture sizes are available (through which the moth enters the main body of the trap). A larger size of aperture may help in the capture of larger species, but conversely may increase the escape rate of smaller species. The rainshield is made of sturdy clear and colourless PVC, and simply and quickly bolts on top of the cone unit. The individual sections that make up the Ranger® are available to purchase from our 'Spare Parts & Lights' page, so damage to, or loss of, any part of your trap is both easy and economic to rectify.
Vertical Actinic Steady Bar or Double Steady Bar (Optional Extra). The steady bar or bars can be fixed across the cone of certain models (see grid below) and must be used if you wish to vertically mount either single or multiple straight actinic tubes. Insectopia recommend the use of the double steady bar to ensure stability on longer actinic tubes..
Complete Lighting Rigs (Optional Extras). Insectopia offer four different lighting rigs. 22w actinic circline with lightweight actinic electrics set and showerproof control unit. 160w Mercury Blended Tungsten, 20w compact blacklight* lamp or 25w compact blacklight-blue* with brass ES fitting lampholder. All our rigs have a generous 9.5m of cable and are fitted with a UK mains 13A 3-pin plug.
*Possible Substitution: On occasion, an 18w blacklight or 20w blacklight-blue may be substituted, depending on available stock. If you do not wish to receive a substitution, please specify this in the "Shipping and Handling" delivery instructions box on checkout.
IMPORTANT LIGHTING SAFETY WARNING: If you are planning to use a MBT lamp, Insectopia recommends the use of a rainshield. MBT lamps must not be operated a) uncovered in rain, or b) with the shield in conditions of wind-blown slanting rain. Raindrops are likely to cause the bulb to crack or explode, with risk of personal injury. In inclement conditions Insectopia therefore recommend the use of blacklight or circline lighting sources, which run sufficiently cool not to be shattered by rain. Insectopia also recommend the use of actinics rather than MBT lighting for attended trapping and public events.
