Safari XL Moth Trap

Safari XL Moth Trap

In stock

NEW for 2019

Our new Safari XL moth trap is a versatile super-lightweight, supremely portable, economical unit. Drawing on customer feedback from the past several years, the XL is a modified version of our original, extremely popular, Safari design.

New features include:
Lightweight - weighs only 310g (11oz)
Larger size - 40cm (16") diameter and 34 cm (13.5") tall, the XL is roomy with plenty of space for eggboxes and your catch of moths. When not in use, packs away to only 1cm deep.
U-shaped zip - for ease of access
Geotextile base - extra durability when placed on the ground or other surfaces

Just like the original Safari, the XL has an integral central cone and assembles rapidly. It can be hung, or ground tethered using tent pegs (not supplied, please follow the Related products link for this item). The
Safari XL accepts ES fitting blacklight and blacklight blue actinic lightsources held with shade rings through the 38mm (4") lampholder fitting-ring which sits at the bottom of the cone. It can also be used with lightweight LED lighting units. The lampholder can be quickly and easily removed to fit an actinic vane unit. Trapping effectiveness is further improved by the whole body shining with translucent 'UV glow' so making the best use of low wattage actinic tube lighting.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING: The Safari XL does not have a rainshield so Insectopia recommend the use of actinic or LED lighting sources, which run sufficiently cool not to be shattered if it begins to rain during their use. The use of mercury blended tungsten (MBT) or other hot-running lamps are not recommended, however could theoretically be used with the Safari XL in dry weather at the user's own risk. Such hot lamps must NEVER be operated in rain, drizzle or damp conditions, or when such conditions are predicted, as raindrops are likely to cause the bulb to crack or explode with risk of personal injury. Insectopia also recommend the use of actinics or LEDs rather than hot-running lamps for attended trapping and public events.

NOTE: photographs show the Safari XL when fitted with a 20W blacklight lamp and 38mm lead set. These are optional extras and are not included with the trap. Price shown below is for the XL trap only.

Our Safari moth trap is a versatile super-lightweight, supremely portable, economical unit.

This collapsible fabric trap is 35cm (14") diameter and 26 cm (10") tall and when not in use, packs away to only 1cm deep. It has an integral central cone and assembles rapidly. It can be hung, or ground tethered using tent pegs (not supplied, please follow the Related products link for this item). The Safari accepts a range of actinic light-sources including circline, tube and BL & BLB lamps. Trapping effectiveness is further improved by the whole body shining with translucent 'UV glow' so making the best use of low wattage actinic tube lighting.

The Safari® cone features velcro type straps which can be used to mount 22 watt actinic circline tubes vertically or horizontally across the cone. At the bottom of the cone sits the 38mm (4") lampholder fitting-ring, ready to accept your MBT lamp up to 160 watts, or your BL/BLB compact lamp. The lampholder can be quickly and easily removed to fit an actinic vane unit (please note, Watkins and Doncaster vanes do not fit this product). Vertically mounted straight actinic tubes can also be fitted - to do so you will need to purchase the steady bar (see Related products).

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING: The Safari trap does not have a rainshield so Insectopia recommend the use of actinic lighting sources, which run sufficiently cool not to be shattered if it begins to rain during their use. Insectopia also recommend the use of actinics rather than hot-running lamps for attended trapping and public events.

Ranger Moth Trap

The Ranger® trap features mix-and-match elements to suit your personal trapping needs.
It's fully collapsible, unbelievably lightweight, and comes with a carry-bag.

The collecting chamber can be ground tethered or hung. Its frame is made of sturdy wire with solid bar support legs. The sides are of transparent fine-netting with an 'n' shaped double-slider zip for easy access, and there is a durable geotextile base for use on uneven or rough ground. Approx dimensions 10.5" (27cm) tall, 17.5" (44cm) in diameter. The Ranger central cone is made of strong, light-impervious cotton. Models suitable for use with actinic circline or horizontal straight actinics have velcro straps for easy mounting. The cone includes either a plain ring, or a 4" lampholder fitting-ring, depending on the model chosen. Two cone base aperture sizes are available (through which the moth enters the main body of the trap). A larger size of aperture may help in the capture of larger species, but conversely may increase the escape rate of smaller species. The rainshield is made of sturdy clear and colourless PVC, and simply and quickly bolts on top of the cone unit. The individual sections that make up the Ranger® are available to purchase from our 'Spare Parts & Lights' page, so damage to, or loss of, any part of your trap is both easy and economic to rectify.

Vertical Actinic Steady Bar or Double Steady Bar (Optional Extra). The steady bar or bars can be fixed across the cone of certain models (see grid below) and must be used if you wish to vertically mount either single or multiple straight actinic tubes. Insectopia recommend the use of the double steady bar to ensure stability on longer actinic tubes..

Complete Lighting Rigs (Optional Extras). Insectopia offer four different lighting rigs. 22w actinic circline with lightweight actinic electrics set and showerproof control unit. 160w Mercury Blended Tungsten, 20w compact blacklight* lamp or 25w compact blacklight-blue* with brass ES fitting lampholder. All our rigs have a generous 9.5m of cable and are fitted with a UK mains 13A 3-pin plug.
*Possible Substitution: On occasion, an 18w blacklight or 20w blacklight-blue may be substituted, depending on available stock. If you do not wish to receive a substitution, please specify this in the "Shipping and Handling" delivery instructions box on checkout.

IMPORTANT LIGHTING SAFETY WARNING: If you are planning to use a MBT lamp, Insectopia recommends the use of a rainshield. MBT lamps must not be operated a) uncovered in rain, or b) with the shield in conditions of wind-blown slanting rain. Raindrops are likely to cause the bulb to crack or explode, with risk of personal injury. In inclement conditions Insectopia therefore recommend the use of blacklight or circline lighting sources, which run sufficiently cool not to be shattered by rain. Insectopia also recommend the use of actinics rather than MBT lighting for attended trapping and public events.

Ranger Step Choices

Ranger Step Choices

STEP 1/ Central cone type.
Your options are shown in in the grid to the right. So, for example, 38mm Edison Screw fitting lamps can be used with the Ranger Multi and ES style of cone, but not with the Circline style.

STEP 2/ Cone base aperture.
Regular cone - 7" (18cm) deep, with a base aperture of 2.25" (5.5cm)
Wide cone -5" (13cm) deep, with a base aperture of 4" (10cm)

STEP 3/ Rainshield.
Insectopia recommend using a rainshield with MBT lamps. Using a rainshield may also help to extend the life of your actinic lightsource. Please note that rainshields cannot be fitted when using a vane lighting unit.

At Insectopia, we know that buying a moth trap can be a big investment. Our Moth Trap Gallery has lots of photos so please take a look so you can be sure of your choice before you buy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email us.
